Phil Thompson snubs Lionel Messi and Pele from his World XI but includes Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe https://ift.tt/3b3oEK5
PHIL THOMPSON opted for Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe in his attempt at picking a World XI without two players from the same club or country.
Naturally, some big-name stars were left on the cutting room floor when the Liverpool hero went without Lionel Messi and Pele.
Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher were among the former players carefully picking their line-ups and Thompson drew upon his experience to enlist stars of his 1970s and 80s pomp.
Pat Jennings, Billy Bremner and Gerrard added a British touch to his XI, which also features 1970 World Cup winner Carlos Alberto.
The right-back spent his career in the Americas and arrived ahead of attacking icon Pele and Neymar, given that he rules out any fellow Brazil or Santos player from the team.
Men typically associated with only one or two clubs are prevalent, from Liverpool’s Gerrard to AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini and former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany.
Joining them in defence is Mats Hummels, who has spent his entire career in Germany.
Cristiano Ronaldo, snubbed by both Gerrard and Carragher, is picked by Thompson alongside Diego Maradona, Mbappe and Didier Drogba in the frontline.
An Ivory Coast international who stuck with Chelsea throughout his peak, Drogba proved a popular choice in the lockdown selections.
Messi has not, meanwhile, because he would rule out any fellow Argentina or Barcelona player but ex-defender Thompson could have traded him in for Maradona when he made the call.

Likewise, bringing in Ronaldo condemns any other Real Madrid, Juventus, Portugal or Manchester United player.
But given Thommo’s loyalties perhaps the latter was always unlikely to make an appearance.
Featuring in Rangers boss Gerrard’s XI were the likes of Cafu, Roy Keane and Andrew Robertson, although he did agree on Kompany, Drogba and Mbappe being worthy of a place.
He told The Football Show: “It took me more than a couple of hours, I was stewing on this for a couple of nights.
“I felt like I had a team and I was happy with it, I had Zidane in it, I had [Roberto] Carlos, Baresi in it. Then you get a text of Carra saying, ‘No, no, no that’s wrong – they played together’.
“It’s actually more challenging than what you think. But we got there in the end and I’m really pleased with the team I picked.”

And fans were incensed by Joel Glazer’s pioneering role in the attempted breakaway European Super League.
Chelsea fans barricaded stars from entering Stamford Bridge prior to their match with Brighton on Wednesday night.
And United supporters have followed suit, blocking the entrance to the Red Devils’ AON Training Complex at Carrington.
Banners featured the slogans ‘Glazers Out’ and ’51& MUFC’, likely advocating for Germany’s 50+1 fan ownership rule.
Fans holding up signs of protest made it onto the first team training pitch.

How Man Utd could line up with Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane after £310m European Super League transfer boost https://ift.tt/3swNQ2L
MANCHESTER UNITED are back on the trail of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane ahead of a big summer of spending.
The Red Devils have emerged as one of 12 European giants out to line their pockets by forming a Super League.
SunSport previously revealed that all clubs could all earn FOUR TIMES more money per season than last year’s Champions League winners.
United’s motivation for joining the proposed tournament could earn up to £310m as an initial ‘golden hello’.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will then rake in a minimum of £130m each season from their share of a £3.1billion total pot.

The move was hit by an epic backlash from players, pundits and fans alike but United are set to stubbornly forge ahead with plans for domination.
And what’s left of the extra money dished out between Ed Woodward and Co may be spent on bringing new players in.
United remain keen on a long-term partner to captain Harry Maguire following doubts over Victor Lindelof and have identified Varane.
The Old Trafford outfit looked into signing the French centre-back three years ago but were told it would cost more than £100m.
Varane was one of the centre-backs identified by Jose Mourinho during his last summer in charge at the club in 2018.
His successor Solskjaer could now be the one to make a move with the 27-year-old having just over a year left on his Madrid contract.
But United are set to face competition from fellow Super League side Chelsea in the race to land £60m-rated Varane.
Meanwhile reports this month claimed that the Europa League semi-finalists are keen to renew their interest in Jadon Sancho this summer.

And it comes as Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke admitted the club will listen to ‘exceptional offers’.
Sancho’s arrival could also give Solskjaer the chance to deploy Mason Greenwood in his favoured central role.
Edinson Cavani is expected to leave United on a free transfer at the end of the season while doubts persist over Anthony Martial.

Pogba ‘wants £500,000-a-week new deal, Varane talks, Haaland contract boost, Milenkovic EXCLUSIVE https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
PAUL POGBA has demanded an incredible £500,000-a-week to stay at Manchester United, according to reports.
Were the France World Cup winner to agree that figure, it would far outstrip the £375,000-a-week paid to current highest earner David de Gea.
Meanwhile the Red Devils are reported to be holding ongoing talks with Raphael Varane’s entourage.
Real Madrid are said to be willing to sell the Frenchman for the right price this summer.
One of Real Madrid’s potential targets is Erling Haaland, but neither they nor Barcelona are reported to be able to meet the Norwegian’s wage demands.
That could let United in, with the Red Devils still on a firm financial footing despite the coronavirus pandemic.

How Arsenal could line up against Sheff Utd with Odegaard a major injury doubt and Arteta dropping Euro flops https://ift.tt/3dSqf7k
ARSENAL have been dealt a blow with Martin Odegaard set to miss the trip to Sheffield United on Sunday.
The Norwegian missed Thursday’s draw with Slavia Prague in the Europa League after picking up an ankle problem on international duty.
The issue is now set to keep Odegaard out of this weekend’s clash against the Blades while he may also miss the return leg in the Czech Republic.
When asked about the Real Madrid loanee’s availability, Arteta said: “We don’t know.
“He wasn’t able to play today and he will be out, I think, for the next game or two. But we don’t know yet.”
Calum Chambers remains a doubt for Sheffield United after he missed the midweek draw with Slavia due to a knock.
Arsenal return to domestic form in search of their first win in five games – with a 3-3 draw with West Ham and losses to Liverpool and Olympiakos.
Arteta added: “The way I see them every game, the way they compete every game is to win football matches. I don’t see any difference from the Sheffield of a few weeks ago under Chris (Wilder). We’ll go there to win it.
“We are going to face a difficult game again. We have no time to recover or prepare the game, so we know what we’re facing.”
Pablo Mari should get the chance to play at Bramall Lane although Arteta may persist with a partnership of Gabriel and Rob Holding.

Mohamed Elneny could come into the midfield in place of Thomas Partey and goalscorer Nicolas Pepe will expect to start too.
But former Chelsea winger Willian could be among another option out wide while Gabriel Martinelli is also vying for a place in the XI.

How Man Utd could line up against Tottenham with Marcus Rashford an injury doubt and dilemma over De Gea and Henderson https://ift.tt/3dSH9D5
MANCHESTER UNITED have been handed a boost with Marcus Rashford set to be fit to start this weekend’s clash against Tottenham.
The England star was on target in the 2-0 Europa League win over Granada but was withdrawn during the game due to a lingering foot issue.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted pre-match that Rashford was not 100 per cent fit after he was also forced off in the win over Brighton.
But the Norwegian played down any fears that the 23-year-old’s injury problems had worsened meaning he is likely to start on Sunday.
He said: “I don’t think you need to be concerned about his fitness, no, of course barring any injury.
“His fitness is really good, he’s an athletic boy, he’s a fit boy, a strong boy. You see tonight when he goes into headers and challenges, he can look after himself.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Marcus Rashford
“At one point of course you hope to get to a postion where he doesn’t have to play every game, every minute and at the moment we have to take him off because his foot’s a little bit sore.
“Hopefully that’ll improve as the season goes on because I think he was better tonight than he was on Sunday.”
Solskjaer is already facing a striker crisis with Anthony Martial out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
The French international injured his left knee in France’s World Cup qualifier with Kazakhstan late last month, which they won 2-0.

Edinson Cavani provided a late cameo on Thursday and may get a chance to start in Martial’s absence with Rashford back on the left.
With the David De Gea and Dean Henderson saga rumbling on, Solskjaer made a big statement in starting the latter in midweek.
Having regularly used his ‘back-up’ goalkeeper in the Europa League, it suggests Henderson will return to the starting XI this weekend.
And Spaniard De Gea is reportedly set to be axed in the summer with Europe’s biggest clubs being offered his services.
