Where the England team vs Croatia at Euro 2004 are now, from Rooney to Vassell https://ift.tt/2QLf0G9
ENGLAND’S Golden Generation had fans dreaming of silverware when Sven Goran-Eriksson’s side lined up at Euro 2004.
And 17 years ago, they managed a 4-2 won over Croatia that had us all believing they could go all the way.
Two goals from Wayne Rooney and one each from Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard saw the Three Lions reach the knockout stages of the Euros on foreign soil for the first time ever.
With undoubtedly one of the strongest sides since their 1966 World Cup win, the nation was left shattered after penalty heartbreak to Portugal in the quarter-final.
It was a case of what could have been if Rooney hadn’t broken his metatarsal in the early stages of the game.
But where are the players that featured in that contest now?
David James
Keeper James played for England until the World Cup in 2010 earning 53 caps.
After a year stint at Bournemouth in 2013, James raised eyebrows with a move to Icelandic side ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar in a player/coaching capacity.
He then moved to India with Kerala Blasters as a player and later managed the club in 2018.
James was eventually sacked as manager 11 months later.
Gary Neville
What happened to him?
The former Manchester United right-back hung up his boots in 2011 and has since forged out a successful career as a pundit for Sky Sports.
Alongside Jamie Carragher, Neville has become a huge hit with viewers on Sky Sports for his in-depth analysis.
The Twitter regular also had an unsuccessful spell as manager of Valencia and was England’s assistant manager.
John Terry
The Chelsea legend has also gone into coaching and continues to build his reputation on the touchline.
After ending his illustrious playing career at Aston Villa, Terry took up an assistant manager position to boss Dean Smith where he remains now.
Sol Campbell
Defensive rock Campbell retired from football in 2011 after a final spell at Newcastle.
He then had a number of years out of the game where he turned to politics and in 2015 confirmed his intention to run for the Conservative Party nomination for the Mayor of London.
He returned to football in 2017 when he was assistant manager to Dennis Lawrence at Trinidad and Tobago.
He got a shot of management at Macclesfield and pulled off a great escape to keep them in League Two.
Campbell was later appointed Southend manager, but left the club in 2020.
Ashley Cole
After a stint in the MLS, he spent a season at Derby before retiring.
Now one of England’s greatest left-backs is forging out a career in coaching and is part of the staff for Chelsea Under-15 side.
David Beckham
Golden Balls remains one of the most famous names in football and is looking to take the MLS to new levels with his latest venture.
He retired in 2013 after playing for Paris Saint-Germain and became co-owner of Manchester-based side Salford City.
Beckham is also president of Inter Miami CF who started their inaugural campaign last year.
Steven Gerrard
Gerrard retired in 2016 after spending a season at LA Galaxy.
He then returned to boyhood club Liverpool as a youth coach in January 2017.
In April he took charge of the Under-18 side before being announced as the manager of Rangers in 2018, where he helped the club win the Scottish league.
Frank Lampard
Lampard has enjoyed a meteoric rise as a coach after hanging up his boots.
After a stint working in media, Derby announced his managerial appointment for the 2018-19 campaign.
A heartbreaking play-off defeat followed before Chelsea sensationally announced his return as manager following the departure of Maurizio Sarri.
He finished in the top four in his first season, but was sacked in his second.
Paul Scholes
Goalscorer against Croatia, the once publicity-shy Scholes has emerged into the limelight to become a television pundit.
He has also become Salford’s co-owner with his Class of ’92 Manchester United team-mates.
Scholes also had a brief managerial stint at Oldham but quit after just seven games in charge.
Michael Owen
Once England’s wonderkid, Owen now works as a pundit for BT Sports.
He also followed up his interest in horse racing by becoming a racehorse breeder.
Owen also released a book last year called Reboot: My life, my time.
Wayne Rooney
Rooney, who scored twice against Croatia, is the only member of the side that still plays today.
Following time spent in the MLS with DC United, Rooney sensationally made a return to England for a swansong at Championship side Derby.
He is now Derby boss after retiring from playing.

Subs
Darius Vassell
Vassell never played for England again after missing the penalty against Portugal at Euro 2004.
The striker has gone off the radar after officially retiring in 2016.
After leaving Man City in 2009, he went to Turkish side Ankaragücü before ending his career at Leicester.
Phil Neville
Neville has enjoyed a varied coaching role after retiring from playing.
From caretaker boss of Salford, he was assistant to brother Gary at Valencia before taking the England Women’s manager role.
Most recently, he joined Becks in America to become coach of Inter Miami.
He is also co-owner of Salford.
Ledley King
King remains a one-club man after injuries forced him to retire from football in 2012.
He is still employed by Tottenham, where he works as a coach to Jose Mourinho.

Celtic 1 Rangers 1: Morelos scores his first derby goal in 13th Old Firm game to keep Gers’ unbeaten dreams alive https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
ALFREDO MORELOS scored his first Old Firm derby goal in 13 attempts to rescue champs Rangers a point against Celtic.
It also kept up Steven Gerrard’s side’s hopes of going the entire season unbeaten having already won the Scottish Premiership.
Elyounoussi deservedly headed Celtic in the 23rd minutes, but fiery striker Morelos equalled things up seven minutes before half-time.
Both sides had their chances in the second period but some smark keeping from Allan McGregor and Scott Bain respectively kept the game at 1-1.

Tuchel records best start of any Chelsea manager EVER as he breaks record with 13th game unbeaten after Atletico win https://ift.tt/3bY94BF
THOMAS TUCHEL wrote his own piece of Chelsea history after outdoing any of his predecessors by stretching his unbeaten start to 13 games.
The German masterminded a flawless 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last 16 second leg on Wednesday night.
The Blues secured their place in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2014 as goals from Hakim Ziyech and sub Emerson saw off the LaLiga leaders 3-0 on aggregate.
And the impressive display gave the former PSG boss a new Chelsea record.
Tuchel, 47, eclipsed Luiz Felipe Scolari’s unbeaten start to life at Stamford Bridge in the 2008-09 season.
Scolari racked up 12 games without a loss at the start of the campaign but Tuchel has gone one better after a stirring performance saw him get one over counterpart Diego Simeone.
The ex-Borussia Dortmund manager had eclipsed Everton’s Carlo Ancelotti and Spurs’ Jose Mourinho in recent weeks.
Ancelotti kicked off his double-wining 2009-10 season with nine games undefeated.
And Mourinho, after introducing himself to the English press as ‘The Special One’, made it to double figures in his first stint at Chelsea in 2004-05 – before leading the West Londoners to their first league title in 50 years.
Tuchel is yet to taste defeat since he took over from sacked Frank Lampard in January, winning nine and drawing four of his 13 games in charge in all competitions.

The backbone of his incredible run has been Chelsea’s resolute defence which has helped the side climb into the Prem’s top four.
Tuchel is yet to concede a single goal at Stamford Bridge in six home games and has watched his side let in just two on the road.
One of which was Antonio Rudiger’s calamitous own goal at Sheffield United, with Liverpool loanee Takumi Minamino the only opposition player to notch a goal against Tuchel’s side for Southampton.
Injured defender Thiago Silva was spotted going beserk with suspended duo Mason Mount and Jorginho after Emerson’s stoppage-time goal ensured Chelsea progressed to the last eight for the first time in seven years.

Real Madrid and Spain legend Iker Casillas confirms split from wife Sara Carbonero just three days after denying rumours https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
REAL Madrid legend Iker Casillas and his wife have confirmed they have split just three days after appearing to deny reports of a break-up.
The retired goalie and presenter and model Sara Carbonero admitted their love had “taken separate paths” but said they would remain close to continue the “marvellous job” of raising their two children.
The star couple famously kissed on air during a post-match interview after Spain won the World Cup and have helped each other through serious health scares during their five-year-marriage.
Former Spanish International Iker, who had to quit football after a heart attack, said in an emotional Instagram post in Spanish: “Both Sara and I feel enormously proud of the family we are and of having shared a love that has filled us with happiness during all our years together.
“Today our love as a couple takes different but not distant paths since we’ll continue together in the marvellous task of continuing to be devoted parents as we have been up until now.
“This is a well-considered decision which we have taken through mutual agreement.”
The 39-year-old, father to Martin, seven, and Lucas, four, with Sara, added: “The respect, affection and friendship will remain for ever.
“Our priority is, through affection and compromise, to share the wellbeing and education of our children and protect them so they grow in a stable and healthy environment.
“With these words we ask you please to respect our privacy in this moment of change.
“These will be the only public words we issue for the time being and in the future.
“Many thanks for your understanding.”
The identically-worded statements were posted alongside a photo of the couple in happier times, showing Sara with her arm round Iker’s neck as he touched her hand.
They were published after a week of confusion following a report in Spanish magazine Lecturas claiming they had split.
Hours later a denial, which wasn’t officially attributed to Iker and his wife but cited close friends, appeared in glossy magazine Hola!.
Lecturas claimed the couple had been living apart for months, saying the former Real Madrid and Porto shotstopper had moved into another house near to the family home on the gated estate of La Finca just outside the Spanish capital.
Sports presenter Sara, currently working in radio, announced in May 2019 she had been operated on for ovarian cancer.
Doctors discovered the malignant tumour shortly after the heart attack which brought her husband’s playing career to a premature end.
She underwent surgery at Madrid’s prestigious Ruber International Clinic to remove the tumour before undergoing several months of chemotherapy.
Early last month it emerged she was back in hospital, with Spanish papers reporting she had suffered a cancer relapse although that was later denied.
She is thought to have gone into hospital for an operation but has made no comment on the motive.

Casillas, dubbed Saint Iker for his ability to produce spectacular saves, officially announced his retirement from professional football last August following his May 2019 heart attack.
He made 510 appearances during his 16 years with Real Madrid and is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in footballing history.
He married Sara, once voted the sexiest reporter in the world, in March 2016 three months before the birth of their second child Lucas.
They famously kissed on air during a post-match interview after Spain won the 2010 World Cup.
They married in secret on March 20, 2016 but details of the union only emerged 10 days later.
Sara had declined to comment on the Lecturas magazine reports of a split on Wednesday after dropping her sons off at school.
She told a Spanish TV reporter who asked her how she felt and whether she wanted to say anything: “I’m not going to say anything thank you.”
One well-placed insider said: “The reports of the split were obviously true but it’s evident Iker and Sara wanted to announce it on their terms and in their own way.”

How Man Utd could line up next season with Haaland, Oblak, Kounde and Trippier as Solskjaer plots transfer overhaul https://ift.tt/30zNTzm
MANCHESTER UNITED are stepping up their pursuit of Atletico Madrid superstar Jan Oblak ahead of a summer overhaul.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the market to strengthen a number of positions to close the gap on rivals City next season.
Sergio Romero finally looks set to quit on a free, while David de Gea‘s future at the club is looking increasingly unclear.
Elsewhere, Dean Henderson is yet to prove himself capable to taking on the No1 jersey full-time and United are said to have looked at Oblak.
CHELTENHAM SPECIAL OFFER – GET THE FIRST RACE FAVOURITE AT HUGE 50/1 PRICE
The Red Devils have been tracking the Slovenian star, 28, for over a year, dating back to De Gea’s long-running contract saga.
The Atleti stopper – who is keen on the ‘attractive’ Premier League – still has over two years to run on his current contract.
And SunSport revealed that United will struggle to afford Oblak’s sensational £103million release clause.
But agreeing a deal for his Atletico teammate Kieran Trippier – who grew up supporting the Old Trafford outfit – may prove easier.
The Red Devils continue to be linked with the former Spurs man, 30, who has just 15 months left on his current contract.
SunSport previously reported that United want to sign a new right-back this summer to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
A swoop for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde could complete Solskjaer’s triple raid on LaLiga stars to bolster his backline.
It is understood that the 22-year-old is on the club’s shortlist but United face competition from Real Madrid and Barcelona for the France youth starlet.

In attack, United have reportedly been told that they can sign Erling Haaland this summer, but only for £150m.
The Borussia Dortmund striker is among the hottest property in European football, with Chelsea and City both interested in a move.
Asked last month about Haaland, who he managed at Molde, Red Devils boss Solskjaer refused to rule out a move.
