Olivier Giroud’s amazing year at Chelsea revealed as 2020 goal stats show why Lampard cannot allow transfer away https://ift.tt/2M53q6h
OLIVIER GIROUD’S stunning 2020 in front of goal shows why Frank Lampard cannot allow the French striker to leave.
The former Arsenal striker has bagged 17 goals since January, with England star Tammy Abraham second with 11 strikes.
Giroud, 34, tops the charts by some distance when it comes to the top goal scorers in West London since the turn of the year.
New boy Timo Werner is third after netting eight times since arriving at Stamford Bridge from RB Leipzig for £54million.
Wideman Christian Pulisic has scored seven goals with former penalty taker and vice captain Jorginho notching six.
Ex-Blues winger Willian also makes the list after rattling home six goals before departing across London for Arsenal at the end of last season.
Giroud was linked with a move away from the Blues after struggling for game time under Lampard with the delayed Euro 2020 tournament on the horizon.
He was urged by France coach Didier Deschamps to consider a move away if he wanted to maintain his place in the international side for the tournament in the summer.
Giroud has been linked with Serie A table toppers AC Milan as well as Marseille and even West Ham.
He showed he still has what it takes on the European stage by slamming home an incredible FOUR goals in the 4-0 Champions League win over Sevilla earlier this month.

Mason Mount was Chelsea’s best provider during the last year, creating an impressive 64 chances, including eight assists, ahead of right-back Reece James who contributed 45 chances in total.
Kurt Zouma tops the billing for successful passes with 2,221 ahead of Cesar Azpilicueta but the club captain did come out on top for most tackles won with 49.
Combative midfielder N’Golo Kante conceded the most fouls after jotting up a half century of misdemeanours with Three Lions regular Mount only one behind on 49.

How Man Utd could line-up at Leicester on Boxing Day with Edinson Cavani pushing for start and Martial rested https://ift.tt/34Gplr2
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER will almost have a full-strength side for the trip to Leicester on Boxing Day.
Manchester United head into the contest in terrific form having won their last six consecutive away league matches.
Wednesday’s impressive 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Everton will give the boss a selection headache as Edinson Cavani pushes for a start.
The Uruguayan bagged the late winner against the Toffees and was a constant threat throughout.
Cavani, 33, could lead the line in attack with pace on the flanks in Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.
Bruno Fernandes will slot in the No10 role while Anthony Martial could find himself on the bench for the second game in a row.
Solskjaer’s only injury concern comes in the form of Scott McTominay who will miss out with a groin injury.
The Scottish international limped off in the 6-2 win over Leeds but isn’t expected to be sidelined for long.
His absence could see Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba partner each other in midfield although Fred is pushing for a start after being rested in their last outing.
It will be a familiar back line for United with Victor Lindelof, who was rested against Everton, partnering Harry Maguire.
Most read in Football
Luke Shaw is expected to come back in at left-back with Aaron Wan-Bissaka also rested in the win over Everton.
Solskjaer’s side sit five points behind Liverpool but have a game advantage over their rivals.
A victory would see United leapfrog Leicester into second as the title race hots up.

How Arsenal could line-up against Chelsea on Boxing Day with Gabriel Martinelli FIT but Aubameyang still struggling https://ift.tt/3aIvXZE
GABRIEL MARTINELLI is set to hand Mikel Arteta a fitness boost to face Chelsea on Boxing Day.
The Arsenal winger limped off in the 4-1 Carabao Cup defeat with Manchester City on Tuesday with a shin injury.
Martinelli, 19, was making his first start in nine months after overcoming a serious knee injury.
Despite his lengthy absence, the talented Brazilian showed his class with a fine run and cross to set up Alexandre Lacazette for the equaliser.
But his latest knock is not thought to be serious and told fans on Twitter: “Feeling fine and ready to go again.”
Martinelli is expected to start if fit in an attack that could see Alexandre Lacazatte and Nicolas Pepe.
Youngster Eddie Nketiah is pushing for a start but Lacazette’s goal against City is likely to give him the nod.
Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is expected to miss out again as he battles to overcome a calf injury.
In midfield, boss Mikel Arteta will welcome back Granit Xhaka following his red card against Burnley.

With Thomas Partey out injured, he could line up alongside Dani Ceballos with Hector Bellerin and Bukayo Saka deployed as wing-backs.
In defence, both Rob Holding and Kieran Tierney were rested against Man City and are expected to come back into the frame with Gabiel keeping his place.
Struggling Arsenal head into the clash without a league win in seven as they currently sit four points adrift of safety.

How Chelsea could line-up at Arsenal on Boxing Day with Hakim Ziyech OUT but Hudson-Odoi could be back in starting XI https://ift.tt/3pkAzt1
FRANK LAMPARD is likely to be without at least three of his key players for the short trip to Arsenal on Boxing Day.
The Chelsea boss will be hoping to give supporters a belated Christmas present as they aim to keep the pressure on Liverpool at the top of the table.
Hakim Ziyech is ruled out with a thigh injury which could mean a return to the starting XI for Kai Havertz.
Speaking of his niggle, Lampard said: “You have to wait to recover.
“It’s not a long-term concern and we hope to have him back in the next week or so.”
N’Golo Kante is likely to play behind a forward line that could see Callum Hudson-Odoi slotting in on the right flank.
The England winger has recovered from a thigh injury and was an unused sub in the 3-0 victory over West Ham on Monday.
Lampard will also have decisions to make with his defence.
Both full-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell are unlikely to feature with knee and ankle injuries respectively.
Chilwell limped off early on against the Hammers while James missed the contest but both aren’t expected to be on the treatment table for long although could miss the game with Aston Villa on the 28th.

Lampard added: “They’re both doubtful so I can’t give you an answer at the moment. We’re not sure whether they will be fit for either game.”
Their absence is likely too veteran Cesar Azpilicueta return at right-back with Emerson filling the void on the left.
Chelsea head into the contest in fifth, six points adrift of Liverpool at the top of the league.

How Man Utd could line-up at Everton with Scott McTominay out with groin injury but Edinson Cavani coming into team https://ift.tt/37FJH5G
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER could ring in the changes for Manchester United’s Carabao Cup quarter final with Everton.
The Red Devils face four games in the next 10 days including a tricky Boxing Day trip to fellow top four hopefuls Leicester.
The Norwegian is likely to be without Scott McTominay against the Toffees with a groin injury.
The Scottish midfielder became the first Premier League player to score twice inside three minutes against Leeds but limped off at the end of the contest.
It means Paul Pogba could come into the frame after he was left on the bench in their last outing.
Nemanja Matic is likely to partner him in the middle of the park with Juan Mata filling the No10 role.
The Spaniard has been impressive in his two Carabao Cup appearances scoring three times.
Donny van de Beek is also in contention as he looks to snatch his opportunity with both hands.
Mason Greenwood was another who remained on the bench against Leeds while Edinson Cavani is pushing for a start in attack.

In defence, Luke Shaw remains a fitness doubt and Alex Telles will replace him at left-back.
Solskjaer will have to decide whether to stick with Victor Lindelof alongside Harry Maguire or opt with Eric Bailly who has been on the fringes of the first team.
Dean Henderson remains United’s cup keeper and will get the nod over David de Gea.

Lionel Messi collects record 7th Pichichi Award but says winning LaLiga crown back from Real Madrid more important https://ift.tt/2WEP8eC
LIONEL MESSI has claimed a record seventh Pichichi Award but insists his only goal is to fire Barcelona back to the top of LaLiga.
The trophy, named after Athletic Bilbao’s legendary striker Rafael Moreno Aranzadi, is awarded to the league’s top scorer.
#Messi has his hands on Pichichi No.: 7⃣https://t.co/vh1iQHuEcN pic.twitter.com/zgt7kmNY6I
— MARCA in English (@MARCAinENGLISH) December 21, 2020
Messi, 33, took the crown after bagging 25 last season – his lowest tally since the 2008-09 season.
It was also the fourth consecutive season he has collected the trophy after fierce rival Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus in 2018.
Ronaldo won it three times during his time in Spain while Athletic’s Telmo Zarra was the previous joint-record holder alongside Messi following his goalscoring exploits in the 1940s and 50s.
But the Argentine legend insists he is not thinking about winning the Pichichi for an eighth time and instead wants to take the LaLiga title back from Real Madrid.
He told Marca: “An eighth Pichichi? I don’t know, nor am I thinking about it, it is not something I am worried or obsessed about.
“I would prefer to win La Liga before getting the Pichichi, we are fighting towards that.

“We are slowly growing. We struggled to get going in the league, nor did we deserve to drop all those points, we could have won several of those games, like at Alaves, Getafe, Real Madrid…
“We created a lot of chances, that would have changed the situation, but we have to put together a run of good games to get ourselves back at the top.”
Barcelona are struggling yet again this season and currently sit 5th, eight points adrift of league leaders Atletico Madrid.

Who Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City can face in Champions League last-16 draw including Lionel Messi’s Barcelona https://ift.tt/2VZPrQZ
LIONEL MESSI and Barcelona could await any of the three remaining English teams in the Champions League last-16.
Juventus’ stunning win at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night relegated the Spanish giants into second place of their group.
And they will join the unseeded pack in next week’s draw.
After Manchester United’s exit from the competition, only Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City remain of the Premier League quartet.
All comfortably won their group and will be seeded, potentially earning them a calmer path to the quarter-finals.
Uefa will conduct the draw from their Switzerland headquarters on Monday, December 14 at 11am.
No team can be drawn against another side from their own country or their first-round group at this point.
It means Chelsea will avoid a reunion with Sevilla, Porto are off the menu for City, and another clash with Atalanta will have to wait for Liverpool.
But any of Atletico Madrid, Borussia Monchengladbach, Lazio, RB Leipzig and Barcelona could be drawn against the English trio.
There is plenty of danger among the unseeded teams with both United’s conquerors Leipzig and Atalanta going deep into last year’s competition.
Monchengladbach helped knock out Inter Milan and caused Real Madrid significant issues in the group stage.
And there is plenty of European pedigree in the Sevilla, Porto and Lazio ranks.
Liverpool will not need reminding of why Diego Simeone’s Atleti are so hard to beat, yet may still fancy revenge for last year’s defeat at this stage.
Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona may be struggling in ninth place in LaLiga, with the defeat to Juve coming after a shock loss at Cadiz.
But any side containing Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Co cannot be underestimated with the knockouts coming after the club’s presidential election and the transfer window.
A significantly different Blaugrana side could step out at the Camp Nou in February to the one we know now.
Ties are split over two weeks, with the first leg to be played on February 16/17/23/24.
Unseeded teams will be drawn at home first, allowing group winners home advantage in the second leg.
Most read in Football
Second legs will take place on March 9/10/16/17 with all kick-offs at 8pm.
Completing the seeded teams are Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.
Victors will be awaiting the quarter-final draw, scheduled for March 19.
UCL DRAW: SEEDED & UNSEEDED TEAMS
Seeded: Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, PSG
Unseeded: Atletico Madrid, Borussia Monchengladbach, Atalanta, Sevilla, Lazio, Porto, Barcelona, RB Leipzig

Chelsea’s wage bill revealed with Alaba in line to become highest earner ahead of £310k-a-week Havertz after transfer https://ift.tt/3gw4JGy
DAVID ALABA will become Chelsea’s best-paid player if he completes a reported £350,000-a-week switch from Bayern Munich.
The Bundesliga giants have ended contract negotiations with Alaba, 28, ahead of his deal expiring in June.
Any club will be able to make their own offer and pre-agree a summer switch when the January transfer window opens.
And Chelsea are one of four clubs reportedly keen on such a deal.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are all linked but Alaba‘s wage demands may be a big stumbling block.
German publication Bild report on the Austrian’s demands of £350,000-a-week.
Such a high pay packet would comfortably make him Chelsea’s highest earner.
Kai Havertz currently holds the title with a £310,000-a-week deal signed in the summer, ahead of Timo Werner’s £270,000-a-week salary.
N’Golo Kante and Kepa Arrizabalaga earn £150,000 with Christian Pulisic back on £145,000.
Thought to also be in the current top ten are Callum Hudson-Odoi, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech.
Should Chelsea want to see through their reported interest in Alaba, they will have to discuss the matter with agent Pini Zahavi.
The veteran negotiator is said to have a good relationship with the Blues.
Most read in Football
However, Barcelona presidential hopeful Joan Laporta is also a long-term ally of Zahavi’s.
The dire financial situation at both Madrid and Barcelona may make it difficult for either side to lure Alaba.
With no transfer fee involved, the Champions League winner could drive a hard bargain when it comes to personal terms.
